Update 18

It’s been a couple weeks since the last update so we decided to update you with Liam’s process. Liam is now sees the orthopedist ever 2 weeks instead of ever week because he's growing so fast. On April 16th Dr. Albenese decided to stop stretching Liam’s ankles in fear of damaging his growing process. We originally thought we were going to get a break from having casts on Liam before they had to clip his Achilles tendon but on April 16th Dr. Albanese told us he was done stretching and wanted to keep casts on him until the surgery. He is afraid of we left him uncasted before the surgery that his feet would start to digress back to the way they were before that castings started. As defeated as we were we understood and wanted the best for Liam. Dr. Albanese also told us Liam will need more surgery than expected. He originally was planning on just doing a small cut on the Achilles tendon. This procedure would have been done right in the doctor’s office. They would of put this numbing cream on the back of his ankle and let it sit for 45-hr before the clipping. This would have been an out-patient procedure. But since he has more severe clubbed feet he told us he has to do more surgery than expected. He will now need to be put under and the surgery will be done at Upstate Hospital (this will be an in-patient procedure). It's scary for anyone to be put under but even more scary for an infant. Instead of just a small clipping (where they only cut part of the achilles tendon) they need to do a full release which means they need to cut the whole tendon. They also said they might need to do some bone reconstruction as well. They won’t do the surgery until he’s at least 6 months old. We don’t know exactly when yet. After the surgery he’ll be in casts for at least 2-3 months. So needless to say Liam will be in casts until the fall.
