Update 4
It's been another long day here at Community General, but pretty successful. Erica is doing great, she's been out of bed every few hours, and taken several walks with Liam and I around the maternity floor. Discharge is tomorrow morning, and while it's nice to have all the help and care here, I think everyone in the Cammer family is ready to get back home. Liam is doing pretty well today as well. As far as all the normal infant stuff goes, he's been great, he's eating very well, going to the bathroom, all the normal stuff. His legs are really tough right now, today Erica and I have been working on doing our own diaper changes, feeding, burpings, dressing his wounds, all the stuff we are going to have to do at home. We have had relatively good success, it's just so hard because while his left femur is broken in the middle and pretty well stabilized in a splint, his right femur is broken right near his hip, and isn't able to be splinted or stabilized very well. This makes breast feeding impossible, so we've been bottle feeding, and I have been doing all the burping, which is another major challenge with two broken, uncasted legs. Changing diapers may be the toughest thing though, it's a two person job the requires a wiper/diaper person, and a lifter to raise his hips while trying to keep his legs stable. That's the toughest part, knowing your hurting the little guy just trying to take care of him. He is taking Tylenol regularly which does help take the edge off things for him, and praise God he settles down very quickly once he is comfortable.
Please keep us in your prayers tomorrow, as we journey home. This will be an enormous challenge, as Liam is unable to tolerate his car seat at all because of the position it forces his hips and legs into. We have asked the hospital if we can take his bassinet here home with us for few days, to use as a car seat. Just as I am writing this the nurse has stopped in and basically told us that the bassinet in the car may be impossible do to some legal issues for his safety, and that we will have to talk with a social worker tomorrow for options on getting him home. They even said now that he might have to stay another day until something can be worked out. As you can imagine, Erica and I are pretty apprehensive about this, both for his safety getting home, and whether or not we will even be able to do so. They make infant car beds, but getting one on New Years day may be impossible, and will certainly be another expense either way.
The good news is that once he is in casts things should be much more manageable. Our appointment isn't until Wednesday with Pediatric Orthopedists, so we have some really challenging days ahead. Please continue to pray us through these next few days, all the unknowns are really piling up right now - it's tough. Erica and I are staying positive and doing it well, but there are so many challenges already, and having your baby hurting sure isn't making it any easier. Thank you for all the support, we really appreciate all of you.
